rest_client not equal to rest_client
Note when a Ruby setup, Sinatra in this instance, says it’s missing rest_client it is missing the gem rest-client.
Not so friendly stable Ruby
Went to install ruby on a RHEL4 machine and wanted to get the latest and greatest, becaue the 1.8.1 packed for RHEL4 wouldn’t cut it. So I went out to the ruby site and grabed that package marked latest stable release. I believe this ended up untaring to be 1.8.8.1, which I then  installed. Upon […]
Virtualization, Rails and CDNs
A few weeks ago we (not me, but my company) started work on our GoComics igoogle gadget for the release of igoogle v2. We weren’t really sure how well it was going to go over, it didn’t take long before we were suddenly at 150,000 users and we were listed along with the New York […]
good stuff
Looking back over the last year I was thinking about which new application has made the most impact in my day to day work. My first thought was Xen and what it’s done for the servers, but that path had been started down previous to me taking over the reigns as sysadmin. I don’t feel […]
curves
The last six months we’ve been dealing a lot with Rails at work. I wouldn’t say I’m an old school perl guy but it’s what I cut my web teeth on and the language I know best. I have been a perl-ie man for the bulk of the last 10 years. As my current position […]
rotate those rails logs
As we come closer to going live with a high traffic Rails apps it’s time to hammer out log rotation. Thus far I’ve established a standard deployment location of /usr/local/sites/sitename for our apps. Following this advice I think I’ll use standard logrotate to move the logs around. I’ve read that log rotation can be done […]
listing your gems
getting a list of gems becomes very important when you are running multiple servers with mongrel instances on them. Our environment I’ve been trying to go with a Beta, Stage and Prod environment for everything and Rails gets really mad when your module version doesn’t match what it expects, backwards compatibility doesn’t seem to be […]
in two
“The Ruby community has agreed upon two spaces as being the optimum for indenting blocks of code…” Oh hell yes, they got that right. I’m beginning to like it a little more now.
train-ed
I’ve been fighting the Ruby on Rails movement, I’m a perl programmer and proud of it damnit! I broke down last night and started to plow through some docs and I’m trying to work on a basic project to get my feet wet. From the sysadmin side I’ve got installing the components on the server […]
